EF(Education First) VS Kaplan
Hello, This is the first time i write in a blog, and this time i want to compare Education first(EF) or also known as English First with Kaplan. These comparison are made through my own experience in both study center. Both are expensive, but Kaplan set higher price for sam programme.
I was former student of EF BSD and Kaplan BSD, Indonesia. Before i joined EF, there will be entrance test or placement test, and i was put in Frontrunner 12, with CEFR level B2.2. The first time i joined EF the offer was really awesome, we will be teached by 50% native teacher, and 50% by local teacher. EF has a really good place to study, the room was clean, comvy, and technology advance. It even has a touchscreen projectors 😂😂. Each class will have big screen led TV connected with computer to helped us learn. I studied there for 9 monts before i quit. The teacher was nice, but as time passes the native teacher was deacreasing, At the end, i only got 20% classes teached by native teacher, sometimes even less. at that moment i've reached CEFR C1.1 level.
EF general english has a lot of level. And if you are below 15 years old, joining EF was not an option, They are playing instead of studying. I've seen a lot of 12 years old kids in Trailblazers come to EF just for playing, matching pictures. It is not worth with the money you are going to spent.
We studied for 2 hours each lesson. Most of the class, 1.5 hours spent for studying and half an hour to play games with our classmates. The lesson was light and i don't think it's hard enough for CEFR level C1.1 at that point. I found no problem on doing their task or even their progress test which held every month if i not mistaken. I really felt that EF hasn't push us hard enough to do grammar or reading task, but i felt 9 monts in EF was not a waste, it dramatically improve my speaking and listening.
I studied in Kaplan for 3 months, in IELTS programme. same, There will be entrance test before you took the class. The test wasn't hard, but too test how fast you do something. there will be fill in the blank question, i mean a lot of fill in the blank question. you have to reached level 5 to took the programme. Luckily i was in level 5. The programme was short, but we were fully teached by native teacher. Ms. Jessie was nice, she was an Australia graduated native teacher. In Kaplan we were teached how to analyze and do IELTS model task. It was challenging. The room was also great, but i should admit, EF study classes was better, but Kaplan Study place was comvy enough. The class was small, which is great. At that moment it was only 7 of us in a class. Sometimes 2 of the students didn't come, which was a benefit for me 😁😁. We were taught how to do specific type of task. The teacher really drill our grammar, writing, and reading out. Altrough it's hard, the teacher was very supportive. She really have a heart and passion to teach us. She is the best English teacher I've ever had. After 3 months classes she still willing to gave us her e-mail to help us if we need her help.
Kaplan English center really has the professionality in teaching IELTS, TOEFL, even SAT proggrame. The prove is me, by the help of Kaplan i managed to get 7 on my IELTS test, improved significantly from 5.5.
In conclusion, Althrough couldn't really compare general English class and IELTS class programme, by the experience that i have, I think i prefer Kaplan rather than EF if you are taking IELTS, TOEFL, or SAT programme. They have Worldwide reputation, their experience in that programme are udoubtable. EF facility are up in the air, the room was comvy, the class are equipped with technology advance devices. But I really do not suggest to put children below 15 years old to EF, It is just not worth the money. From my own analysis, EF are very helpful when you wanted to improve your speaking and listening. So, If that's your goal go for it. Beside that, not. Ielts class programme in EF cost about RP 6.000.000, with 10% native teacher, while Kaplan cost around RP 8.000.000, but with 100% native teacher. I'll choose kaplan if i were you. Ohh, you will get cashback as high score guarantee programme still running.
